Canada in the Contemporary World 10F
This class is formally titled “Canada in the Contemporary World”. The grade 9 Social Studies course is designed to take a look at our current situation in Canada in terms of demographics, geography, and political organization. We will look at the interactions among the people and the influence of land on the development of our nation. We will cover topics like citizenship and identity and the challenges/opportunities of people with differing identities and perspectives. Through this course, you are to become informed decision makers in terms of local, national and global topics.
Concert Band/Jazz Band/Choir 10S
Students perform in a traditional Concert Band setting, playing a wide range of diverse musical compositions. Students learn based on "recursive learnings", constantly building on and improving skills they already have as well as learning new material. There are opportunities to travel to Festivals throughout the year.
Digital Pictures 25S/Digital Films 25F
This course combines two-half credit courses that will provide students with the skills and knowledge to convey a message through an original digital image and to plan and create documents for personal and business communications.
ELA 10F
The main objective of the course, through the study of language arts, is for each student to be able to understand and appreciate language and to use it competently and confidently in a variety of situations for communication, personal satisfaction and learning. It provides students with the opportunity to think critically and independently. It offers students opportunity to gain the practical skills they need to meet the demands of an information society. Throughout the course, the students will engage with and compose texts that inform, persuade, analyze, foster understanding and empathy, reflect culture, express feelings and experience, and bring enjoyment.
Life/Work Exploration 10S
Students increase their selfawareness and interpersonal skills, and develop knowledge and skills in personal management and career exploration while learning about their interests, personality traits, and values. Students develop connections between school and work develop their confidence, personal skills, and abilities connect skills and knowledge to tasks and responsibilities of occupations explore careers and the world of work, including labour market information and workplace safety and health are exposed to meaningful community and career experiences
Math 10F and Transitional Math 15F
Grade 9 Mathematics (10F) is a foundation course to prepare students for multiple possible pathways in Grades 10 to 12. Units of study will include: geometry, exponents, linear relations, equations and inequalities, scale and similarity and statistics and probability.
This course runs concurrently with Math 10F. Units are designed to review middle years material that is essential to success in the next Math 10F unit. For example: if the next unit is algebra heavy, a review unit on algebra is completed first. The major units covered include: fraction operations, BEDMAS, algebra and surface area of 2D shapes. Students earn ½ credit for successful completion of these outcomes.
Phys. Ed/Health Ed. 10F
This is a full credit compulsory course necessary for graduation. Students in grade 9 will be given a numeric grade based on how well they meet the learning outcome. The aim of the program is to provide students with planned and balanced programming to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes for physically active and healthy lifestyles.
Visual Arts 10S
Visual Arts education develops important disciplinary and cross-curricular competencies for learning and living well together in an interconnected world. Research indicates that well-designed visual arts education contributes to learning engagement, self-efficacy, and a wide range of positive academic, social, and emotional effects. Visual Arts education offers learners a diverse, unique, and powerful ways of perceiving and making meaning about the world through practices that include drawing, illustration, work on paper, painting, media arts, textile art . These practices offer multiple ways for learners to engage with, connect with, and respond to their world through various approaches and in diverse visual arts education contexts. Visual Arts education is not just about learning the language and practices of the visual arts, “it is about addressing who we are as people, embracing differences, encountering numerous cultures, interacting and collaborating with others, and inviting response”.
