Skills Canada National Competition 


Winnipeg is hosting the 23rd Skills Canada National Competition at the RBC Convention Centre from May 31 – June 3, 2017. Students and apprentices from trades training programs showcase their skilled trades. These young people compete at local, regional, and provincial events to earn a spot to represent their province at this national level of competition.

The competition features a diverse range of over 40 skilled trades and technologies competing in contests in the following areas:

  • Communication Contests: 2D Character Computer Animation; 3D Character Computer Animation; Graphic Design; IT and Network Systems Administration: Photography: Web Design Development; IT Office Software Applications: Video Production; Electronics; Geographic Information Systems
  • Manufacturing Contests: CNC Machining; Precision Machining: Mechanical CADD; 2 Dimensional CADD; Refrigeration and Air Conditioning; Robotics (4 team); Industrial Mechanic Millwright; Welding
  • Employment Contests: Job Search; Public Speaking: Workplace Safety; Job Skill Demonstration
  • Construction Contests: Architectural Technology and Design; Cabinet Making; Electrical Installations; Plumbing; Brick Masonry; Carpentry; Sheet Metal Work
  • Service Contests: Aesthetics/Nail Technology; Cooking; Hairstyling; Baking; Landscape Gardening (2 team); Fashion Technology
  • Transportation Contests: Aerospace Technology; Automotive Service; Heavy Equipment Service; Auto body Repair; Outdoor Power and Recreation Equipment; Car Painting

On June 1, 2017 a group of our grade 9 – 12 students from each Elton Collegiate and Rivers Collegiate have an opportunity to attend this exciting national event. This Skills Canada event provides students with exposure to future career opportunities in skilled trades and technology. It also engages students with Try-A-Trade® and/or technology hands-on opportunities to explore careers and raise awareness for the value of skilled trades and technology.
