Grade 9 Compulsory Courses

Canada in the Contemporary World 10F/E/M
Social Studies are defined as a study of people in relation to each other and to the world in which they live. The focus of the grade 9 Social Studies curriculum is centered on Canada and what it means to be Canadian. The course also examines Canada’s role as a global citizen and what that means to us as individuals.

English Language Arts 10F/E/M
The main objective of the course, through the study of language arts, is for each student to be able to understand and appreciate language and to use it competently and confidently in a variety of situations for communication, personal satisfaction and learning. It provides students with the opportunity to think critically and independently. It offers students opportunity to gain the practical skills they need to meet the demands of an information society. Throughout the course, the students will engage with and compose texts that inform, persuade, analyze, foster understanding and empathy, reflect culture, express feelings and experience, and bring enjoyment.

Math 10F/Transitional Math 1 15F
Mathematics 10F is a foundation course to prepare students for multiple possible pathways in Grades 10 to 12. Units of study will include: geometry, exponents, linear relations, equations and inequalities, scale and similarity and statistics and probability.

Transitional Mathematics 1 15F is designed to close the gap between grade 8 and grade 9 concepts.  Units are taught throughout the year, as necessary, to support the Mathematics 10F outcomes.

Physical Education/Health Education 10F/E/M
This course will attempt to cover the outcomes of the Grade 9 and 10 Phys. Ed. Curriculums, through planned and balanced programming to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes for a physically active and healthy lifestyle for all students.

Science 10F/E/M
This course enables students to understand basic concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics. Students will learn scientific theories and conduct investigations related to cell division and reproduction; atomic and molecular structures and the properties of elements and compounds; the universe and space exploration; and the principles of electricity.
